Otto Scherzer, who proved in 1936 that round lenses have chromatic and spherical aberration that are unavoidable, believed there was no physical law preventing electron microscopes from obtaining atomic resolution. At the International Electron Microscopy Meeting in Toronto in 1978, he attributed the lack of success to funding shortfalls.
